What you get (+1 bonus)

  • 20 checks, one container file.

Container basics, GA4 tags, shop events, lead-gen events, Google Ads and Meta tags, consent, hygiene and access, each with what good looks like and where to look in Tag Manager.

  • A prompt for every check.

Paste-ready prompts for Claude or ChatGPT, each with a trust label - SAFE, VERIFY or WON'T WORK WITHOUT JOINED DATA - that tells you when to check before you act.

  • Export it or connect it.

Upload the exported container file, which holds 14 of the 20 checks in full and part of 4 more. Or read it through the Tag Manager API, signed in with a login that has only Read access.

  • The checklist for what's missing.

Workspaces, users, the Google tag's own settings and what your site sends outside Tag Manager, plus a way to run the whole audit when you can't share the file.

  • Test what really fires.

A 10-minute Preview test with a test order, a failed and a working form, and a declined cookie banner, plus a chapter on what a clean container can't catch.

  • A fix list in order.

A summary prompt marks each check OK, Fix or Can't tell, with who fixes it, starting with anything that double-counts or misses sales and leads, then consent.

  • +1 bonus

that runs the container checks from your exported container file, the filled-in checklist or screenshots, marks each check OK, Fix or Can't tell, and only reads, changing nothing in Tag Manager.

Who it's for, and who it's not for

Two people at a desk test a website: one submits a test form on a phone while the other watches a debugging view on a laptop.

Who it's for

  • Owners and marketers of online shops and lead-gen businesses who want to know whether their tags send the right sales and leads, without writing code.
  • Anyone who inherited Tag Manager from a previous agency, developer or employee and wants to know what's live and who can publish.
  • Agencies and freelancers who take over client containers and want a repeatable check that ends in a written fix list.

Who it's not for

  • Analysts who already audit containers through the Tag Manager API or a dedicated audit tool - you'll know most of this.
  • Anyone without at least Read access to the container. The user list may also need an account Admin, so you may need help from whoever has it.

Honest note

A container describes what should fire, not what does. All 20 checks can pass while a rebuilt form stops sending leads, a shop plugin sends its own events, or the cookie banner loads late, which is why the guide ends with a Preview test and a monthly comparison with your real orders or leads. As of October 2026 Google offers no official Tag Manager MCP server, and the connections we found ask for permission to edit and publish, so the guide connects with a Read login only. A container file is business data: check your AI plan's data settings before you upload it.
